The Political Ecology Working Group (PEWG) invites undergraduate students engaged in political ecology research to present academic papers as part of the Undergraduate Symposium at the Twelfth Annual Dimensions of Political Ecology (DOPE) Conference, to be held March 24-26, 2022, virtually. The Undergraduate Symposium is an opportunity for young scholars to take part in important discussions within political ecology, and to have a forum to share their work and receive feedback from scholars in the field.
We encourage submissions to the Undergraduate Symposium from undergraduate students who are engaged in the ecological dimensions of political, economic, social, and scientific research regardless of their topical, theoretical, or methodological frameworks. This includes but is not limited to:
- Environmental racism and environmental justice
- Cultural ecology
- Ecological modernization
- Environmental history
- Environmental law
- Restoration ecology
- Political economy of nature
- Genetic technology
- Geospatial technologies
- Commons, enclosures, and land tenure
- Environmental risk
- Resource management, conservation, and sustainability
- Nonequilibrium ecology
- Landscape studies
- Environmental discourse and policy
- Urban ecology
- Queer ecology
- Environmental sociology
- Food security and sustainable agriculture
- Critical science studies
- Knowledge production
- Feminist and heterodox approaches to environmental economics
Paper Session:
Undergraduate students are invited to submit an abstract or paper (depending on the state of their research project at the time of submission) consisting of original nature/society research conducted by the undergraduate student presenting the paper. While co-authored works are eligible, all authors must be current undergraduate students. Paper submissions should be double-spaced, in 12-pt font and 2,500 words or less (which does not include references).
Participants will be given 10-15 minutes to present research in the format of a paper or academic talk. Each session will have a graduate student or faculty moderator who will keep time and ensure that the session runs smoothly. NOTE: Please keep in mind that our moderators come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and are not responsible for expanding on concepts and themes that appear across the session’s presentations.
Registration:
All participants in the Undergraduate Symposium must complete the online conference registration by February 28th, 2022 (additional registration information can be found on our website). Students accepted for the Undergraduate Symposium must be able to attend the conference. Contact the Undergraduate Symposium coordinator Aylin Castro (aylincastro@uky.edu) with any questions about the symposium.
Undergraduate Paper Competition:
In addition to completing the conference registration, students may submit a copy of their paper by February 23, 2022, to be considered for the Undergraduate Paper Competition. All papers submitted by the February 23 deadline will be automatically entered in the competition. The winner will receive an award of $150.
Please send papers or abstracts in PDF format via email with the subject line “DOPE 2022 Undergraduate Symposium” to the Undergraduate Symposium coordinator Aylin Castro (aylincastro@uky.edu). Information identifying the author should be removed from the manuscript text to aid in the blind review process. Papers should include a cover page with the following information:
- Name
- Pronouns
- Mailing address (for accounting purposes if submitting paper by the February 16 deadline for the paper competition)
- Email address
- University affiliation
- Status (e.g., freshman, junior, etc.)
- Major
- Brief bio (150 words max.; if submitting paper by the February 16 deadline for the paper competition)
PEWG may use this information for promotional purposes (except for mailing and email addresses), and to announce the competition winners.
