UNDERGRADUATE SYMPOSIUM:
We invite undergraduate students engaged in political ecology research to present academic papers as part of the Undergraduate Symposium at the seventh annual Dimensions of Political Ecology Conference, to be held February 24-25, 2017. The Undergraduate Symposium is an opportunity for young scholars to take part in important discussions within political ecology, and to have a forum to share their work and receive feedback from scholars in the field.
We encourage submissions to the Undergraduate Symposium from undergraduate students who are engaged in the ecological dimensions of political, economic, social, and scientific research regardless of their topical, theoretical, or methodological frameworks. This includes but is not limited to:

- Ecological modernization
- Environmental history
- Environmental law
- Restoration ecology
- Political economy of nature
- Genetic technology
- Commons, enclosures, and land tenure
- Environmental risk
- Resource management and conservation
- Non-equilibrium ecology

- Sustainability
- Urban ecology
- Environmental sociology
- Food security and sustainable agriculture
- Critical science studies
- Knowledge production
- Feminist and heterodox approaches to environmental economics
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE:
Now in its seventh year, the Dimensions of Political Ecology Conference (DOPE) provides an opportunity to critically examine perspectives on human-environment relationships and to foster interdisciplinary discussions among a diverse group of scholars. In addition to presenting a paper, participants are encouraged to participate in the full offerings of the conference, including field trips, presentations from graduate student and faculty scholars, and the keynote address. The keynote speaker for the 2017 conference is Dr. Sandra Harding, Distinguished Research Professor and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Education and Women’s Studies at University of California - Los Angeles and Distinguished Affiliate Professor of Philosophy at Michigan State University.
THE UNDERGRADUATE SYMPOSIUM @ DOPE 2017
PAPER SESSION:
Undergraduate students are invited to submit a paper consisting of original nature/society research conducted by the undergraduate student presenting the paper. While co-authored works are eligible, all authors must be current undergraduate students. Paper submissions should be eight to twelve double-spaced pages in 12pt font (approximately 2,500 to 4,000 words), which does not include references.
Participant(s) will be given 10 minutes to present research in the format of a paper or academic talk. A projector and computer will be available as presentation aids. Each session will have a graduate student or faculty discussant who will expand on key concepts and themes that appear across the session’s presentations.
REGISTRATION:
All participants in the Undergraduate Symposium must complete the online conference registration by January 15, 2017 (additional registration information can be found on our website: http://www.politicalecology.org/register). Instead of submitting an abstract, please state that you are submitting a paper to the Undergraduate Symposium. The conference fee is waived for all undergraduate participants. Students accepted for the Undergraduate Symposium must be able to attend the conference. Contact Undergraduate Symposium coordinator Megan Parker (megan.parker1@uky.edu) with any questions.
UNDERGRADUATE PAPER COMPETITION:
In addition to completing the conference registration, students must submit a copy of the paper by January 15, 2017 to be considered for the Undergraduate Research Competition. All papers submitted by this deadline will be entered into the Dimensions of Political Ecology Undergraduate Research Competition. The winner(s) will receive a cash prize.
